George Calvert (pictured on the left) was granted the land in 1632 by King Charles the first of England. When George Calvert died his son, Cecilius, took over and established the land as a place for Roman Catholics who were persecuted in England. However once Cecilius had grown old his son was granted governor of Colonial Maryland. He governed from 1661-1676, he later moved back to England. Leonard Calvert, George Calvert's other son, was then allowed to be governor. Maryland was a Proprietary Colony.
